I was testing out the OruxMaps Android app so that I could have maps saved to my phone next time I’m hiking without cell reception. I finally figured out the program, and I think it’ll be very useful in the future. But in the app I also found information that led me to everytrail.com. Everytrail will allow me to plot an entire trip to the map, and then have the photos play in a slideshow along the trail. I haven’t used my Droid to plot any trails yet, but since my photos are all geocoded I was able to import the photos into a map slideshow. Pretty cool:
Mt Washington – Lion Head Trail to Huntington Ravine Trail
Everytrail also has an android app I’m going to have to try out next time.
Mt Washington, NH
Yesterday I climbed Mt. Washington to get my third peak.
It was definitely the best climb yet. Mt Washington was amazing, and the view was spectacular (I’m so glad it was a clear day). We started the climb at 11:00, a little later than we wanted, but not a bad start time. We took the Lion Head trail to the top and reached the summit around 2:30. It got very crowded towards the top of the trail, and even more crowded once we were to the top where people could drive to. :)
Since the Lion Head trail was so crowded we decided to take a different trail down, and picked the Huntington Ravine trail. It was way less crowded, and we quickly discovered why;
Huntington Ravine trail (5.1 miles) branches off the Tuckerman Ravine trail and climbs the bare slabs of Huntington Ravine. This is probably the most difficult trail in the White Mountains, and should not be attempt [sic] in bad weather or used for descent. –hikethewhites.com
We saw no one else on the trail (going either direction). Had I done more research I probably would have chosen to climb up the Huntington Ravine trail instead of down it. But once we started we felt commited and finished it. It was an intense climb, and the views were well worth it.
High Point, NJ
Went to New Jersey to snag my second high point with Finelli (his third high point). We drove to the parking lot on the east side of High Point hoping to take the Monument Trail to the High Point tower. Turns out we didn’t do enough research and the Monument Trail loops around on the other side. We had to road walk and then take a maintained trail the short hike to the tower. It was a short, easy hike.
The tower itself however was a long, hot staircase. Definitely more intense than the hike. :)
Still an easy second peak.
Mount Greylock, MA
I started my goal of attempting to summit the highest point in all 50 states by summiting Mount Greylock in Massachusetts on May 22nd 2010. It was an easy hike up the thunderbolt trail.
